Why Those Boots Ads Piss Me Off

Rantette of the day is over the boots ads with the slogan  'losing weight is the best thing I've ever done', and here is why. Many reasons, see fbk, but quite apart frommy own personal gnarghhh,  here's a few:

And fewer people would feel ugly and like shit.

Books to Read If You Want to Get Inside My Head

For the edification of the few and inexplicable; I'd be absolutely fascinated to hear others' equivalents!

Long, involved, personal. Don't say I didn't warn you! )

Linguistic Mission Statement, or why i talk nonsense in the way i do

Someone wrote this to me earlier: Actually, it’s kinda funny. I’m not an ‘English bod’ as it were, but I can’t stand abbreviations and acronyms, yet you being someone that essentially breathes the language, has no problem with them. Knowledge is power perhaps?

...and my answer turned into a bit of a mission statement. So i thought i'd inflict it on the world, especially that part of it on here who have to put up with my relentless acronymage!:cut for rambling about why i use language the way i do ) Maybe?

help me people!

i have the lovely Kai, from Sheffield, coming to stay betweeb te 15th and the 20th. She's never left Sheffield before and this is her first visit to London. Might anybody be around to help me entertain her, just in a hanging out chatting, mabe going round camden kinda way? Neither of us have any money, but any suggestions of free Cool Stuff to do would be very welcome. Iknow it's just before Bardcamp, but if i tried to organise a readthrough (i'm still burning to do Women Beware Women! and in fact other things!) would anybody fancy it? When would suit? Might have to be in my tiny garret unless anybody has any other suggestions/offers of places, and i appreciate it's terribly short notice and everyone's probably busy already, but it felt it might be worth asking nevertheless. I've screened comments just in case people don't feel like sharing the intimate details of their social calendars with the world, but will probably unscreen unless requested otherwise - if you might be free, even just in a 'quick cuppa so she can see London isn't just me,the BL and a heap of books' kinda way, that would be marvellous

SHOW ME YOUR TEETH, or, reasons why Lady Gaga rocks...

So yeah, this Lady Gaga thing. I'm a little bit obsessed. A lot of this is to do with my personl headspace - she articultes perfectly the unashamedly driven and assertive elements of my sexuality whose expression i have to be very careful of IRL atm. But quite apart from the fact that despite representing a musical genre i'd usually hate i find her work insanely catchy,  ideologically i think she does a hell of a lot of good and important things for me and for feminine sexuality as a whole. Think about it. Yes, she's unashamedly sexual, but her songs are unashamedly and unapologetically about *her* desires and needs. In a world and a muical genre where female singers as sexualised as she are usually playing on the basic message 'look what i want to do for you, look how hot I am' her songs are all 'what can you offer me, this is what i want.'  'Show me your teeth', 'i like it rough', 'i'm a free bitch, baby'. And she has equally assertive and catchy songs about *not* wanting sex, or sexual contact, and not being objectified: 'i'm not your babe...don'twanna kiss, don't wanna touch, just smoke my cigarette and hurt...'
She's like the feminocentric equivalent of cockrock: those wonderful driving, rolling bass beats combined with the bright, defiant power of the keyboard/synth riffs. And it matters. It matter that not every song about women wanting sex keys into the objectification of women or their essential function as the servicers or recipients of male desire. It matter that there's music out there that says 'yes, i want it, and i want it onmy terms, are you good enough?' ('i don't want no paper gangsta, got the flavour and no followthrough' ' i want somebody just as bright, as fabulous...') instead of 'look at me, don't you want me?' It matters that she writes her own songs, ater having built a career writing other people's, and desins her own iconography (and as i'mlooking forward to [livejournal.com profile] steerpikelet discussing, she is a paraody of celebrity culture.) It matters that she's openly bi and kinky because she's a 'free sexual woman' and defiantly in control of her own sexuality, even (especially) when it involves submission, or s&m. It matters that she's confident about her own appeal (i'll get him hot, show him what i've got') but understands not being ('she loves to dance in the dark, cos when he' slooking she falls apar' - will attach interview link here later when i've got time, she's beautifully perceptive about it.) It matters thatdespite all this he's popular and respected by both men and women. Hell, the lady just RULES. Again, [livejournal.com profile] steerpikelet pointed out a rcaefail image that i can't find on a quick image search, so she might not be perfect - but for me, right now, she articulates a confidence in female sexuality, in *my* sexuality, that' very valuable indeed.

feeling skinny, or clowning my sentimental way into obscurity.

There are two linked posts here, really. I'll do the more nevel-gazy of the two on filter (under a cut!) later, but for the moment I just wanted to splurge my reactions at Kate Moss' tactful repetition of the anorexic mantra 'nothing tastes as good as skinny feels' dissected by the lovely Pennyred here. (amusingly enough,if you go o the orginal interview, she follows it with saying she 'alwaysforgets' and it 'never works'. Which is ironic.)

TRIGGER WARNING - pointless rant abt size, insecurity, need, paranoia , you know the drill )

c/s, obv. Sorry for length!

my ashtray heart

There may shortly be a post entitled My Life in Placebo Lyrics (i had to change the Gloria Record on grounds of emotional sanity). If Brian Molko has never either suffered from or een in a relationship with somebody  seriously mentally ill, I will eat any one of my hats, except the genuine Eton topper Sebastian gave me. However, before that, I am going to be proud of having CLEANED MY FUCKING FLAT because it was filthy. I didn't even o to the party I was meant to o to, and in a minute I am going to bed, with the actually very ood book i have to review for the TLS. Hmm.

Is anyone oing to the July Planet Angel?? does anybody want to?

PSA

Boy and I are breaking up, indefinitely but with nothing ruled out. We still love each other, and good friends is definitely the plan, but he's really not in a mental place where he can handle being in a relationship atm, so it seemed the best thing.

Just wanted you to know. C/s, obv, say if you don't want them unscreened.

FUCK ME YESSSSS.... :OD

Dear Sasha,

I wonder if you would be interested in reviewing Blood Royal by Vanora Bennett (Harper Collins), a novel based on the life of Catherine de Valois? I would want a piece of 500-600 words by say June 11 and could send you the book straight away. Let me know what you think.

with best wishes

(TLS literary editor)

FUCK ME. EEEEEEEEE......
